It was the highest rating TV program to date for SBS2, and with record numbers comes a change. The free-to-air broadcaster has told us that the Parade will NOT be returning to SBS2 in 2015 - but instead will be "moved up" to their lead channel, SBS ONE.
SBS Director of Television, Tony Iffland said exclusively to Guidetogay.com “The broadcast of the 2014 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on SBS 2 earlier this year attracted an incredibly strong audience. From this success, we have decided to elevate this iconic event and shift our coverage of the 2015 parade to SBS ONE. We are looking forward to capturing all the colour, spectacle and celebration of the 2015 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and delivering it to even more Australians via our primary channel on Sunday 8 March.”
It's an amazing move for both Mardi Gras and SBS - and it's a win for the community at large, who can both attend the parade in the flesh AND then watch it back on TV with the rest of the country. Its time to frock up, don your sequins and get camera ready so you can show YOUR passion!
Mardi Gras CEO, Michael Rolik said "SBS joined us for the first time last year to broadcast one of the world’s most spectacular night time parades. Having a TV broadcast of the Mardi Gras Parade is really important to our organisation. It enables us to reach regional, interstate and international audiences who can’t get to Sydney for the big night, and to share our celebration of pride and diversity with a broader audience. The move to SBS ONE for the 2015 event will help us reach an even greater audience, and we thank SBS for its commitment to Mardi Gras."
If you want to catch the parade in person, you can simply rock up on the night, or pre-plan and grab a reserved seat (it’s advisable) in the "Parade Sideshow" (click for tix). If you are a Mardi Gras member, you can be right in the heart of the action at the "Diamond Club" on Taylor Square. These seating and VIP spaces will sell out soon - so grab your tickets now.
See you at the parade, and don't forget to tune in to our friends at SBS on Sunday 8th March.
