DJ David (Hilda) Hiscock passed away today

  • Published in Latest

With a heavy heart we regret to inform you that well know Australian Gay community DJ David "Hilda" Hiscock passed away at home in the early hours of this morning (25th April 2009) from an apparent heart attack.

DJ for over 34 years, well known for spinning Disco classics, remixes & pop, and for being a true friend and gentleman - with a turn for wicked one liners!

After a few years working in ABC TV, David started spinning discs in Melbourne at the Union hotel in 1975, then moving to Sydney, playing at The Honest Irishman and becoming resident at Newtown and Imperial Hotels in 1985 until 2004 when The Midnight Shift video bar became his home.

He was also a regular DJ at Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras party and Sleaze Ball as well as working with many community charity organisations such as Acon, Pride, Aids Trust and BGF.  Most drag queens in Sydney have had the pleasure of working with David over the years & messages from many well known names are flowing into his Facebook profile. The memorial group set up by one of his friends Dan Pearce, now has around 500 members in only 24 hrs (search for "In Loving Memory Of David Hiscock"). Just one of the common recollections is that Hilda would often notice a friend walking into the bar and as if by magic, their special song would come on & they'd look up to see David grinning at them.

There are tears and tributes across Sydney, UK, Canada, and the States - with messages not just from friends and fans but from record labels, singers, DJ's and photographers he touched with his magic. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him personally, and those who just loved to dance to his music. Our hearts go out to his family at his sudden passing.

There has been a tribute / moments silence on 25th April at The Midnight Shift Video bar on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst at 9pm when his next shift would have started, and a memorial event is being organised at the same venue for later in the week. David's family have suggested if you wish to make a donation to charity that it can be made to Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.

Sadly missed by all at Guide To Gay and especially Robert & myself who have worked with Hilda on many occasions and considered him a true friend, gentleman & master comedian! Rest in Peace David, & keep those angels dancing.

** Memorial event this Friday, 1 May @ 7.00pm, upstairs @ The Midnight Shift with Tora Hymen as the MC **
