South Africa’s SOWETO Pride Advocates Advancing Rights of Black LBT Women

While most of the northern hempisphere has wrapped up pride season, SOWETO Pride has only just begun.
Culminating on September 26th, this political project was started in 2004 to specifically create a space for black lesbian women to celebrate their sexuality. By no means exclusive to the broader LGBTI community, this event features marches through Johannesburg including the heavily attended protest march that moves through the residential and business areas and ends at a point such a park.

A political program at the end is followed by a cultural program to celebrate the collective struggles and victories of black lesbian women, as the broader women’s movement and as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. Friends, family and all those in solidarity with us in our struggles join in the celebrations. Organisations are able to display their messaging, products, promotional items and to engage with participants.
