Sally Polihronas is a singer, songwriter, performer who you may know through the first Australian reality television show 'Popstars' and a member of Australia's most successful girl band, Bardot.
After years of travel and living a very bohemian lifestyle the soulful gypsy girl is back in Sydney after spending time abroad in LA, NY and most recently London.
She spoke to Guidetogay.com this week whilst she was on the road in Jamaica, to lets us know what she has been up to and what we can expect from her upcoming Sydney show.
So you have been traveling the world, tell us a bit about what you have been up to and where you have gone!
I have spent quite some time away from the spotlight and doing what felt right for me and that was to travel.
After Bardot I just wanted to take a break from the years of go, go, go and to spend more time in the places I had always wanted to visit.
I did my first trip to Europe, visiting the UK, Greece, Vienna, Italy and then I really got the travel bug and spent some time in LA traveling back and forth from Australia until I ended up in London for a year. I love Greece and Europe I feel so at peace there like I’m going home really, I spent a few summers in Greece and visited Paris a few times.
I really need time to develop personally and as an artist away from all the hype and spotlight. I needed life to be real and about things that mattered most, Love, family and spiritual development. Its sounds cliché but maybe I went on a little journey, I think you naturally do that as a woman heading into her 30’s.
In between the travel I worked in the industry teaching dance, coaching talent, working on creative projects from developing my own to working in the entertainment industry and developing my skills in a business world. There has been such a mixture of work! I really enjoy both sides of the industry and I love producing! I still have so many goals that I want to achieve on a work front.
How has the world travels altered you as an artist?
Wow, it has opened my mind, spirit and creativity, every place you visit is different, but there is one common ground and that’s people! No matter where you go we all go through the same struggles and are on this path of life, I tend to draw from these experiences and as an artist it’s important to be aware of who you are so I guess I am much more aware now! I traveled alone and that was so liberating for me, you learn to just trust yourself more.
You have graced the stage at Mardi Gras and appeared in lots of clubs during your pop career, how do you find the gay fans and what do they mean to you?
I think The Gay fans are everything you want in a fan dedicated and loyal once they love what you do they stick with you. I have many gay friends and the excitement they have for music is so wonderful, and not just Lady gaga like some might think.
Mardi Gras and performing at G.A.Y in London were both amazing extravaganza’s totally crazy but so much fun!!
Hello I arrived on a tank at Mardis Gras It doesn’t get more fabulous than that!
Will your new style be something say Bardot fans will enjoy?
I think a lot of the Bardot fans have grown older so I think they may understand where I have gone both artistically and personally. It’s still very much pop but maybe with a little more heartfelt soul.
Your show at the Vanguard in Newtown on August 26 is a one off special - for those lucky enough to get tickets, what can they expect from the show?
I am at a point where I just want to share music, I am such a perfectionist so I could do this whole music thing for personal fulfilment for the rest of my life, but there comes a time where you just have to say I want to share it with music fans and friends who are so over me not doing shows. A lot of them were like ‘bout time!
The show is an acoustic Gypsy show and filled with my heartfelt songs I have written over the years. It should be fun!
