Mardi Gras AGM goes bust

New Mardi Gras AGM was held yesterday with only a tiny proportion of the 3,000 strong membership turning up to the meeting - not even allowing for a quorum to be reached.

Mardi Gras Treasurer, William Law wasnt in attendance so no questions about the financial state of the organisation could be directly answered either.

Questions were raised about the relevance of Mardi Gras in the community - if the AGM, which is integeral to the success of the running of the organisation was so poorly attended.

“Personally, I find it disappointing that from a membership of over 3000 people there are only such a small group of people who are willing to take the time out of their busy lives to attend this AGM,” Imrie told the meeting.

“It is a shame to think that our organisation does not mean enough to see more members attending.
“We are continually questioned about our relevance to the GLBT community. I consider our organisation to represent our community - its history, interests and future.

“In moving forward though we need to look at ways we can create a stronger sense of engagement.”

However, the new board includes David Imrie, Kirk Muddle, William Law, Greg Small and the only woman, former co-chair Steph Sands, who will meet next wednesday night to elect a leader - it is understood that David Imrie will continue in his position as Chair - unapposed.

Mardi Gras faces some massive challenges in the coming year with new and higher public performance charges from the PPCA coming into effect regarding music and entertainment across the entire festival, the continued push for government funding and staffing issues from production, creative and administrative roles as well as community involvement both in vollunteers and ticket sales post 30th anniversary celebrations.
