Little Britain Causes controversy in America

  • Published in Latest
The lads from the hit British comedy Little Britain, wildly popular with a lot of gay men, have been criticised over the "offensive and obnoxious" material of the new American version of their hit show.

Where does the criticism come from you ask? The West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Alliance!

Can't take a joke much? West Hollywood seems to take itself FAR too seriously!

The show hasn't even gone to air yet, however it's the previews that are already causing outrage.

The show - an American spin on the original Little Britain series - features David Williams and Matt Lucas engaging in minutes of full-frontal male nudity, simulated sex acts, gay jibes and fat jokes.

A New York Gay Pride spokesperson told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "Even straight viewers are going to be repulsed if the trailers and pre-publicity are anything to go by.

"Audiences in Britain might be used to this grossly insulting material – but people here aren’t," the Gay Pride spokesperson said.

Prominent US personality Rose O'Donnell, who is gay, appears in the upcoming series.

The spokesperson went on to say how surprised they were that O'Donnell, "a leading voice in the gay rights movement, would allow herself to become the target of such homophobic abuse. This just isn’t what passes for comedy here. It is highly insulting."

HBO, which is airing the new series in the US, said "folks should understand that the best cutting-edge comedy plays off phobias and prejudices. Nobody is setting out to offend anyone here."
