After ten years of loud campaigning, Irish legislatures have finally passed the equal marriage bill in the Senate.

Today the senators ‘Agreed’ to pass the bill in the committee stage and report stage. To stand witness to this monumental change in marriage equality, several people gathered at the Seanad today and broke out in applause.

All that is left to do now is for President Michael D Higgins to sign it into law.

Ireland became the first nation in the world to hold a national referendum on gay marriage in late May and the people voted overwhelmingly in favour of it.
