Pennsylvania’s first OUT state legislator Brian Sims announced this morning that he is running for Congress. Sims will run in the 2nd Congressional District primary race.
Sims joins two other democrats, 9th Ward leader Dan Muroff and Lower Merion Township Commissioner Brian Gordon, in vying to unseat an 11-term incumbent, Rep. Chaka Fattah, a Democrat.
“They need a champion, someone who will stand up for justice, for equality, for women, to the NRA,” said Sims, a clear favorite among LGBT voters and progressives, Philly.com reports.
Fattah has remained unchallenged (for the most part) since 1994, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. But the Congressman is skating on thin ice after being indicted on corruption charges earlier this year. Fattah continues to deny allegations that he used public and charitable funds to give kickbacks to donors.
A YouTube video released today by the Sims campaign emboldens America’s mounting civil rights fronts.
“We face blatant racism on the presidential stage, hatred spun as faith, discrimination in the workplace, and bloodshed in our streets,” Sims says in the video. “I haven’t walked in everyone’s shoes, but I’ve logged enough miles in my own to know I’ll never back down.”
