Best Film: Pride
In a year full of insincere box office grabs, one film stood out for its undeniable heart and soul. ‘Pride’ tells the true story of UK gay activists who worked to help miners during their lengthy union strike in the summer of ‘84.
Equally heart-warming & inspiring, ‘Pride’ reminded you just how emotionally rewarding a great film could be.
Best TV: Carlotta
2014 was a big year for TV movies, with HBO’s production of ‘The Normal Heart’ winning acclaim internationally. But to us, the highlight of the year was ABC Australia’s superb biopic, ‘Carlotta’.
While some questioned the decision to cast a female in the role of the trailblazing transgender showgirl, Jessica Marais silenced critics with her undeniably masterful performance. Adding to the fun was some of the campest dialogue ever heard on Australian TV!
"So does it work?"
"Every bloody night. Just ask the neighbours!"
Best Concert: Queen & Adam Lambert
Freddie Mercury left some mighty big shoes to fill, and Adam Lambert proved he's one of the only acts in the world today with the vocal chops and charisma to pull it off.
Sydney audiences were thrilled when Lady Gaga (whose stage name was inspired by the Queen hit ‘Radio Gaga’) took to the stage to perform a duet. Legendary!
Best Breakthrough Act: Troye Sivan
This openly-gay Perth teenager cultivated a huge following on YouTube, posting vlogs and videos of his music to his 3 million + subscribers.
Before long, he’d caught the attention of the music industry and with the release of his emotional 5 track EP, ‘TRXYE’ scored a Top 5 debut on the US Billboard chart and clocked up Gold sales in Australia. Game changing!
Best Album: Sam Smith
Sam Smith was quite simply the toast of 2014. His debut album, ‘In The Lonely Hour’ topped the charts and unleashed a string of hit singles – most notably the gorgeous ‘Stay With Me’.
"Just a quick one - I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys."
Best Song: Rise Like A Phoenix
‘Rise Like A Phoenix’ was Austria’s entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, but became much more than that.
