A street party announced for Australian marriage equality results night.

  • Published in Latest

Plans for celebrations are well underway for the same sex marriage postal survey in Australia. It will also be a call for action by the government as the postal survey is not binding on the government or any minister in the chamber.

Australians forked out over 122m dollars for this survey where only approx 69% of ballots were returned from those Australians who were eligible to have their say.

The street 'party' will be held in Sydney at the iconic Oxford Street, where the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade traverses each year. With four stages, lots of artists and performers - it will be (hopefully) a celebration and a moment to reinforce Australia's want for equality.

All polls and most politicians are now saying that the YES vote will win hands down. However, if the NO vote gets up - the event will still go ahead and become a force for future change on the issue.

Check out the details and RSVP to the event here.

EQUALITY = Now that the same-sex marriage plebiscite has been defeated, it all comes down to a non-compulsory postal vote. Ballot papers are expected to be sent from September 12 and voters will have until November 7 to send back their votes. A result will be declared on November 15. Unlike with regular voting, you are not legally required to vote unless you want to. To make sure your opinion on the matter is heard, it's important that you're properly registered. Now's the time to check that you're enrolled to vote and your details are up to date. If you're 17 with an upcoming birthday, you can enrol now and be eligible to vote. WOW somebody nominated me for " Australian LGBT Awards " A big thank you to whoever nominated me , Now I have to just write about myself is it possible to do 300 to 500 words how do I fit it all ln lol ...  Last year they launched the Australian LGBTI Awards at the Sydney Opera House with over 300 guests attending the GALA dinner and many high profile individuals showing their support and receiving acknowledgment through their work within the LGBTI space. The Awards are also labelled "The Gay Oscars" with red carpet appearance by The Veronika's, Lucy Lawless, Molly Meldrum, Samuel Johnson, Danielle Cormack and many more . The main agenda of the event is to work with our Allies in the Corporate world and the entertainment industry to have our message of equality endorsed and to reach a wider audience to achieve acceptance . The media personalities attract main stream press attention which not only helps in our quest for equality but provides businesses and corporation a platform to align their brand with the message of equality. The process is as follows: Nominations: are open now to the public. We are receiving thousands of nominations across our 16 categories as we speak . The nominations are public and at this stage we simply let organisations and Nominees know about that they have been nominated. The Nominee can decline or accept the nomination - if accepting we require a 500 word synopsis on the company including and highlighting any work that has been done on LGBTI inclusion . Once all Profiles been received - we will create a shortlist (The Top 10) based on numbers of nominations received and the profile submission received . The shortlist will then be announced beginning of October - and public voting will start - with the winner announced at the GALA dinner - Friday 2nd March 2018 . www.australianlgbtiawards.com.au

Urgent Call For Action On Same Sex Marriage

  • Published in Latest

Australian Marriage Equality (AME) has issued an urgent call to supporters of marriage equality to contact delegates to this week’s ALP National Conference.

AME spokesperson Alex Greenwich said far-right Christian groups are conducting a concerted delegate lobbying campaign that may see marriage equality knocked off the Conference agenda.

“Unless LGBT people and our families and supporters raise their voices now, opponents of equality may succeed in sidelining marriage equality at this week’s conference,” Greenwich said.

“We urge everyone to email or call conference delegates asking them to support marriage equality.

“To help, AME has compiled the following list of conference delegates with their contacts, as well as key points to make.”

In today’s Australian newspaper, Australian Christian Lobby spokesman Jim Wallace said “minority lifestyles should be respected but cannot be expected to dictate society norms as this 2per cent or less of the population seems intent on doing”.

His comments come as the ACL and other anti-gay groups like Salt Shakers mobilise their members to lobby against any debate about same-sex marriage at the ALP National Conference.

Five points you should make in your phone call or email:

1. I am one of the 60% of Australians who support same-sex marriage. Its 64% support when you look at just Labor voters (Galaxy poll, June 2009)
2. Discrimination in marriage is inconsistent with the ALP’s stated opposition to discrimination and its principle of not pandering to prejudice (ALP National Platform, 2009)
3. Marriage in Australia is a civil institution, not a religious one (fmr Family Court Chief Justice, Alastair Nicholson)
4. Civil unions are not an adequate substitute for same-sex marriage
5. For all these reasons, the ALP needs to take action regarding discrimination in Australias marriage laws. At a minimum the National Conference should debate marriage equality.

Anti-gay groups are very successful at mobilising large numbers of people at the last minute to thwart open and public discussion about equality issues like marriage. Supporters of marriage equality should make a phone call or send an email before 5pm on Wednesday 29 July.

Making a call is very easy. Simply tell the person who answers that you are calling to register your support for marriage equality with <person’s name>. Try to mention the five reasons above. The person may ask you for your contact details, which you can choose to give or not to give as you wish.

Sending an email is also easy. Either copy the individual email address below, or copy the “email all” list to send a copy of your email to all the identified ALP conference delegates at once. Copy the five points into your email and include a personal message about why you think it’s important for the ALP to debate equal marriage at its National Conference.
