Glee's 200-Person Trans Choir

  • Written by Pez

In its final season, ‘Glee’ tackles an important and timely subject. The series is exploring Coach Beiste’s physical transition from female to male, including a name change from Shannon to Sheldon. Coach Beiste is played by the fabulous Dot Marie Jones.

In a climactic moment, former student Unique Adams returns to perform ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’ from the musical ‘Hairspray’. In an earlier storyline, Unique’s desire to be accepted as a female was not always encouraged by her parents or fellow students. "Unique is back to make a little bit of a visit, and she's there to support Bieste and be that rock," actor Alex Newell shares.
Interestingly, the idea for Newell to perform this selection came from the song’s composer. The legendary Marc Shaiman - the genius behind the music of ‘Hairspray’, ‘Smash’, and Bette Midler’s finest moments - requested its inclusion on the series.

“Last July, I saw a YouTube of this blessed child from GLEE singing our song ("I KNOW WHERE I'VE BEEN" from "Hairspray") and I promptly wrote to Ryan Murphy and said "Don't MAKE me go off on you, you'd BETTER have him sing this on the show!". Ryan wrote right back "I will!" And lo and behold here it comes! And let me tell you, prepare ye, Alex sings the holy f**k out of it!”

In the performance, Newell is joined by a 200-person trans choir. GLAAD helped 'Glee' producers recruit the choir from all across the United States. "This really is the face of America and you hope that when people see this episode they'll recognize, 'Hey, they look just like me,’” said Glee executive producer Dante DiLoreto. “This isn't about tolerance, it's about coming home, and coming home to who you really are.”

Lady Gaga And All The Oscars Gossip

  • Written by Pez

Lady Gaga will make a “special tribute performance” at the 87th Oscars, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today. "Lady Gaga is a once in a lifetime artist whose musical evolution keeps growing. We are proud to have her perform on the Oscars for the very first time," says Zadan and Meron.

We initially guessed that she could performing the ‘In Memoriam’ segment. Gaga’s rendition of ‘Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye’ from her ‘Cheek To Cheek’ album would certainly be a fitting choice. (Last year’s ‘In Memoriam’ was a stunning performance of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ from Bette Midler). However, inside word is that she is performing in tribute to the film 'The Sound Of Music'.

Zadan and Meron confirmed several other exciting pieces of information:

They are bringing out the big guns to write a showstopping musical number for host Neil Patrick Harris. “On the heels of the international success of last year’s ‘Frozen’ and their Oscar for ‘Let It Go’, we couldn't be happier to have Kristen and Bobby Lopez write an incredibly special song for Neil Patrick Harris and special guests to perform this year on the Oscar stage. YouTube, get ready!” Bobby Lopez is also the songwriter behind ‘Avenue Q’ and ‘The Book of Mormon’.

"Out of the woods and on to the Oscar stage, Anna Kendrick will be performing something special that is sure to be an "Only on the Oscars" moment.”

Openly gay indie pop twins, Tegan and Sara will re-team to perform Best Song nominee ‘Everything Is Awesome’ from ‘The Lego Movie’.

"We're creating several musical sequences for the Oscars and we couldn't be happier that our friend, Jennifer Hudson, will be performing in one of them." Hudson has appeared on the Oscars before, both as a performer and winner.

Presenters will include Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lopez, Shirley MacLaine, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey, Benedict Cumberbatch, Channing Tatum, Chris Evans, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, and interestingly, John Travolta – who famously butchered his script last year while introducing Idina Menzel. Aussies Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, and Naomi Watts will also present. Openly gay ‘Good Morning America’ anchor, Robin Roberts will host the official red carpet telecast.

The 87th Oscars will take place Sunday, February 22 (US time) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and are televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
