George Michael had to cancel his Australian Tour today to thanks to ongoing health concerns.
“I have today announced the cancellation of the shows in Australia which breaks my heart. By way of explanation all I can say at this time is that since last year's illness I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience. They recommended complete rest and the type of post traumatic counselling which is available in cases like mine but I'm afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself. Unfortunately I seriously underestimated how difficult this year would be and although I was right to believe that the shows would bring me great happiness and that my voice would recover completely (I truly think that some of my recent performances have been my best ever) I was wrong to think I could work my way through the major anxiety that has plagued me since I left Austria last December. All that's left for me to do is apologise to my wonderful Australian fan base and to promise faithfully that as soon as I complete these shows here in the UK I will receive the treatment which is so long overdue."

On 5 September, beyondblue launched the national ‘Lefthanded’ campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the direct link between discrimination and depression and anxiety, particularly for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer or intersex people.
Sydney Mardi Gras is the most significant national LGBTQI festival in Australia, and a global beacon of acceptance and celebration of diversity. Partnering with Mardi Gras will provide beyondblue with an excellent platform to continue raising awareness of their important work.
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Co-Chair Siri Kommedahl said: “We are delighted to welcome beyondblue as an Official Supporter for Sydney Mardi Gras 2013. beyondblue’s ‘Lefthanded’ campaign is a crucial initiative to highlight the widespread discrimination still faced by LGBTQI people, and the resulting increase in depression, anxiety and risk of suicide.”
“We look forward to working hand in hand with beyondblue to spread the message of acceptance and understanding.”
beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell AO said that supporting Sydney Mardi Gras presents an important opportunity for beyondblue to raise awareness about depression and anxiety in the LGBTQI community.
“Mardi Gras is a great way to reach this audience as it is the most significant national LGBTQI festival in Australia,” Ms Carnell said.
“beyondblue research shows that, discrimination and bullying are major contributing factors to depression and anxiety, and risk of suicide. The LGBTQI community, in particular, faces widespread discrimination which contributes to much higher rates of anxiety and depression than in the general population.”
“The new ‘Lefthanded’ campaign aims to influence a change in behaviour, particularly among young men. The campaign features real life stories from the LGBTQI communities and invites people to seek support for depression and anxiety from beyondblue.”
